Project Addresses Free-Roaming Horses

A free-roaming horse grazes in Breathitt County.

What do the academic disciplines of sociology, animal studies, agriculture, wildlife management and aviation have in common?

Faculty and students from those respective departments at Eastern Kentucky University are pooling their diverse areas of expertise to address the growing presence of free-roaming herds of horses in rural southeastern Kentucky.

EKU Pre-Vet sophomore Larken Jones brought home the hardware from the 2016 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show held Nov. 3-19. Jones and her mare Excitabull Lady traveled from Berea, Ky., to Oklahoma City, Okla., to become the 2016 Amateur Stake Race World Champion.

EKU's Agriculture Ambassadors traveled to Indianapolis to represent the Colonels at the 2016-17 National FFA Career Show and Collegiate Expo. The 89th annual event, held October 19-22, draws thousands of high school students from across the nation interested in careers in agriculture.

Students from the EKU Agriculture and Horticulture departments hosted the 2016 High School Farm Field Day on Thursday, September 29th.  The event took place at EKU Meadowbrook Farm, where high school students traveled from surrounding counties to see all that EKU’s Ag programs have to offer.

Two EKU chapter officers have been selected to serve the National Delta Tau Alpha agriculture honor society for the 2016-17 year.  Sydney Kleinert, a senior from Clifton, Illinois, and Bethany McKinney, a senior from Mount Vernon, Kentucky, are serving as National DTA President and Secretary, respectively.

EKU’s Department of Agriculture is proud to announce that eight new students were inducted into the Delta Tau Alpha (DTA) Agriculture Honor Society.  The DTA Honor Society serves to promote and recognize scholarship and leadership accomplishments of agriculture students while emphasizing character development, career preparation, and the promotion of agriculture. 

EKU Agriculture Now Offers a Master's in Agricultural Operations and Management

Graduates of agriculture and horticulture programs may now pursue a Master’s degree concentration in Agricultural Operations and Management.

This unique program combines hands-on agricultural experience with creative problem solving and agribusiness management.
